History

Paul Harper and David Spence were neighbors in Grant Park, Atlanta, and met on their front porch smoking cigarettes. Shortly afterwards the two began a series of musical experiments, including recording manipulation, circuit bending, and djing at local bars and parties. Harper's musical background consisting of spots in various punk bands and noise projects, most notably as a founding member of the first formation of Deerhunter. David Spence also playing in several punk bands, most notably as a keyboard player for local punker Derek Lyn Plastic.

Early attempts at a band for the two were made with minimalist rock performances with drummer Dan Walton (also ex-Deerhunter)doing instrumentals and covers of songs by the new wave band Orchestral Manoevers in the Dark. one show having just Harper and Spence, with another having three drummers and the two. At this time John Hannah became a steady member of the line-up initially on drums, and then as a vocalist and guitar player.

the name "Facehugger" was taken from the creature in the Alien films, which Harper was mildly obsessed with throughout his childhood, and was on television when the band was brainstorming for a name.

The band played many shows in 2009 as a trio, making sets out of repetitive guitar and keyboard arrangements played over drum programs and hand percussion. John Hannah spent most of his stage time moaning into a microphone, screaming into it and hitting himself in the face with it. Since John Hannah's behavior was considered unacceptable by the rest of the band, and John was never asked to take on the role as a vocalist or frontman although he persisted to do so, he was asked to leave the band in November of 2009.

an article in an Atlanta publication sums up the bands live show fairly well here:

"One of the most disconcerting acts to grace Atlanta stages in 2009, FACEHUGGER creates an atmosphere that eclipses the normal exuberance experienced at a live show. Drawing from a palette of proto-industrial noise and pop grooves in the vein of Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire and even Joy Division, the group turns out a surprisingly pleasing sound both antiquated and surreal. But the aggressive, hyper-manic performance of vocalist John Hannah is enough to jar an entire audience out of its comfort zone."

Army of Bad Luck released a Facehugger split with local Atlanta band Pleasure Cruise in fall of 2009. 300 copies were pressed onto blue vinyl and each included a CDR with additional tracks.

In the summer of 2009, Dan Wakefield, previously of local acts Ominous Castle and Abby Go Go was added to the line-up as a bass player and guitarist.

In early 2010, the band has also added longtime friend Jaye Marie Spangler as an additional guitarist, percussionist, and vocalist.
